Funfact: If you listen to music that is faster than your heart rate, it is energizing; if you listen to music that is slower than your heart rate, it is calming. Makes sense, right? Lullabys are slow and soothing. Club music (some trance music notwithstanding) needs to be heavy on the bass. The music on your jogging mix or in your spin class are made to challenge your heart and muscles. Even as I’m sitting at my desk, some music (I’m lookin’ at you, Massive Attack) gives you a jolt of energy. Some (Leonard Cohen, this is you, buddy) are good for settling down in the evening.
I have to say, the songs in this mix are are my favourite kind of music. They feel happy to me. These songs stabilize me through those days when an anxiety attack feels immanent. Not hard or fast enough to increase my heart rate and/or blood pressure. Not slow enough to make me tired. These are the Goldilocks songs – just right.
